A tree through the roof is obvious and it gets dealt with. What costs money here is the four days afterwards: the power goes out, the house sits unheated through a January night, pipes freeze and split, and thaw into an empty building while everyone is still looking at the branch in the driveway.

Frequently asked questions

What wind speed will damage a roof?

Less than most people think. Shingles begin lifting around 50 mph in gusts, and 60 to 70 mph will strip sections off an older roof. Damage concentrates at edges and ridges.

What does wind damage look like on shingles?

Creased or curled tabs, granules in the gutters, exposed nail heads, and shingles that look flat but lift by hand. From the ground you will usually see none of it.

Will insurance pay for wind damage to a roof?

Usually, when wind caused it. What insurers dispute is age and wear. A thirty-year roof at the end of its life is often depreciated or declined. Dated photographs settle those arguments.

How much is an emergency board up?

A few hundred dollars for a typical opening; a large roof tarp is more. It is nearly always reimbursable as emergency mitigation, and far cheaper than the water damage it prevents.

What is storm damage restoration?

The full sequence after severe weather: securing the property, removing debris and trees, extracting water and drying, cleaning, then repairing back to pre loss condition. Mitigation is only the first part.

How long does storm damage restoration take?

The emergency and drying phase is typically three to five days. Repairs depend on scope: a re-roof and interior work is a few weeks; structural rebuilds are permitted and run longer.

Does Idaho get hail storms and other natural disasters?

Yes. North Idaho sees hail, severe windstorms, heavy snow load, spring flooding and wildfire, and Kootenai County gets all of them in a typical year.

What to do before we arrive

Make it safe first. Stay away from downed lines, and if water has reached wiring or a panel, leave the power off. Then make temporary repairs. This surprises people. Washington's Office of the Insurance Commissioner tells property owners to tarp and board up BEFORE the adjuster arrives. Protecting the building from further damage is a standard condition in almost every policy. Keep the receipts, because reasonable emergency costs are reimbursable. Photograph and film everything from several angles before anything is moved.

How fast we get there

Crews and equipment run from Spokane Valley and Coeur d'Alene, which puts most of Spokane County, Kootenai County and the Highway 95 corridor inside an hour at any time of day. After a widespread windstorm every restoration company in the region is triaging at once, and we will tell you honestly where you are in line rather than promising an arrival we cannot hold.

The process, once we are on site

Board up, tarping and hazard isolation so the building stops taking on damage. Then a full assessment using moisture meters and thermal imaging, because a wet ceiling means a wet wall cavity somewhere below it. Standing water is removed and professional drying equipment is metered daily; IICRC standards set the moisture level we dry to, not a fixed number of days. Debris removal, contents, and antimicrobial treatment where the water was contaminated. Then reconstruction to current building code, with final inspections to verify it.

Burn scars and spring melt

Two flooding sources are specific to this region. Rain-on-snow along the creeks and rivers drives spring flooding, and burn scar runoff after a wildfire season sends water straight downhill off ground that can no longer absorb it. Both are outside-source flooding, which is the coverage distinction above.
